Sensors: A sensor measures a specific quantity (e.g. temperature) and sends a signal to the computer. Processing: To Perform a series of mechanical operations on a device in order to change or preserve it. Data and Information are Manipulated in order to change into something the computer can understand. It is usually taken in a form of simple instructions eg. Move Analogue: Real world information eg.Temperature graphs, Speed Readings Digital: signals or data expressed as series of the digits 0 and 1, typically represented by values of a physical quantity eg. voltage or magnetic polarization. Measurement: is the monitoring of physical variables without the microprocessor taking action. Control: is when the microprocessor takes action depending on sensor readings eg. starting a motor to open a window if a temperature reaches a certain level. ADC stands for Analogue to Digital Converter. These are necessary for inputting analogue data and information into a Digital Format eg. A Microphone. When you plug a microphone into a computer, you are actually plugging it into an ADC. This then converts the analogue signals from the microphone into digital data that the computer can then process One example of an output device that requires a Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC) is a pair of headphones. When you plug headphones into a computer, you are actually plugging them into a DAC. This takes digital data from the computer and converts it into analogue signals which the headphones can then output as sound |
